The Duchy of Carniola is an independent and sovereign micro nation whose current Duke and Duchess are continuing a legacy started by their forebears in the 14th century.
The Duchy of Carniola is the hereditary government of the Duchy of Carniola under rule of the present putative Duke of Carniola, the said Duchy becoming sovereign and independent upon the abdication of the last Holy Roman Emperor Karl I and currently making its hereditary claims to and for the area formerly known as Carniola.
The Duchy of Carniola's historic capital is the city of Ljubljana, also known as the capital of Slovenia.
Written in German by native Janez Vajkard Valvasor, The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola was published in 1689 in 15 volumes, lavishly illustrated with 528 copperplate engravings. It is an encyclopedia of natural history, customs and folklore, history, and the topography of the region.
